Kuwait consolidates European presence with new truck station in Alps

International Diesel Service, a unit of Kuwait Petroleum International, opened on December 9 a fuel station equipped with a dozen nozzles to be used just by trucks in the busy Brenner Pass that connects Italy with Austria and Germany. It is a move that consolidates Kuwait's decades-long presence in Europe.

“For 30 years IDS is ranked as the third-leading international fuel card provider in Europe,” said Khaled Mubarak Al-Mushaileh, IDS Marketing Director, according to a report published by the Kuwait News Agency. Kuwait owns over 600 filling locations in 24 European countries, he added.

Kuwait Petroleum International also uses the Q8 brand.

The new fuel selling location is strategically important as it lies on the relatively short Austrian stretch of an Alps-crossing road connecting Italy and Germany. Austria is very competitive with fuel pricing, according to the report, so trucks coming from Italy to northern Europe and those going from Germany or Austria to Italy are expected to fuel in this location. Some 100,000 trucks annually are expected to be serviced in this station which has six fuel lanes, the report added.

A total of 33 new IDS sites were added in 2014 in Europe, according to the report.

Kuwait, the world’s fourth largest producer of crude oil, is consolidating its overall network in Europe which saw a large expansion particularly following its purchase earlier this year of sites that were previously owned by Shell Italy.

IDS is key to Kuwait as it is used as an outlet for their diesel exports to Europe.
