LNG station for trucks inaugurated in Barcelona, 18th in Spain: Gas Natural Fenosa

Spain’s Gas Natural Fenosa said it has just “officially” opened a fuel station in Barcelona that will offer LNG pumps in addition to CNG for vehicles and that with it the total number of LNG stations in Spain is 18, which makes the Spanish nation “the European country with the most LNG stations in operation”.

Last update:

“The project seeks to consolidate industrial knowledge and bring together the stakeholders involved in the development of natural gas vehicles and liquefied natural gas infrastructures with a view to developing the main corridors that criss-cross Europe,” the company said in a statement issued on December 10.

There are currently five stations in operation in Europe under an initiative named LNG Blue Corridors Project and the station just opened is the only one in Spain which is part of that network, the statement added.

The cost to build this station in the autonomous Catalonia region where Barcelona is located was close to 1 million euros. The facility was opened in July but the official inauguration was in December, it said. Catalonia concentrates the highest number of LNG stations in Spain. Jose Ramon Freire, director of mobility solutions of Gas Natural Fenosa, was present in the inauguration, Fenosa added.

LNG is natural gas in liquid form.  One of the main challenges is that it has to be kept at the very low temperature of minus 162 degrees Celsius for it to continue in a liquid state.
