Italy has fewer stations from decade ago but those offering services on the rise

The total number of fuel stations in Italy as of the end of 2013, according to the most recently available statistics, stood at 21,800 which is a decline compared with 23,900 at the end of 2000, according to the 2015 Databook, the most recent publication of national oil-related statistics in the country by the Unione Petrolifera (Oil Union).

According to the statistics made available in late December, the country has seen a decline in kiosks or isolated fuel selling locations which decreased from 7,398 in the year 2000 to 3,769 at the end of last year.These stations are defined as the most basic offering only fuel and lubricants.

Meantime, service stations with full services including car wash facilities and a store rose to 9,328 from 8,150 over the same period, according to the information released on December 23. The number of stations located alongside highways were unchanged in the period at 465.

 Fuel stations offering only refuelling and some related services excluding car washes declined to 5,695 from 7,001 over the same period.

A total of 19,257 out of the 21,800 fuel stations in Italy as of the end of last year belong to biggest brands Eni, Erg, Esso, IES, IP Gruppo API, Q8 , Lukoil, Shell, Tamoil, and Total Erg.

The Italian Unione Petrolifera joins together the country “most important companies occupied with the transformation of oil and the distribution within Italy of oil products”. It has 31 company members and was originally founded in 1948.
