English Español Nikola secures found to establish six new hydrogen stations

The California Transportation Commission has awarded the company to fund six heavy-duty hydrogen refueling stations.

Last update:

Nikola Corporation announced that the California Transportation Commission (CTC) has awarded both Nikola and sponsor California Department of Transportation (Caltrans), a $41.9 million grant to build six heavy-duty hydrogen refueling stations (HRS) across Southern California.

Granted under the Trade Corridor Enhancement Program (TCEP), the project furthers Caltrans’ strategy to support the adoption of zero-emission freight  technology across the state. These six HRS will be located throughout the South Coast Air Quality Management District, San Diego County Air Pollution Control District, and Mojave Desert Air Quality Management District.

The sites are expected to enable improved community health and avoid carbon emissions. Each station will be designed to support and scale up over time with the growth of heavy-duty hydrogen refueling needs.

“Nikola is thrilled to receive this grant from the CTC. This award, in collaboration with Caltrans, will allow us to accelerate the deployment of zero-emissions hydrogen refueling infrastructure, which is vital for the successful launch of our hydrogen fuel cell electric trucks in July,” said Carey Mendes, President at Nikola Energy.

This grant further places a strong emphasis on open access stations, and Nikola’s locations will align with this approach in an effort to support the adoption of hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicles.
